Our consumerist society relies on production rates that are completely unsustainable for our planet. Every step in the production chain negatively affects the Earth, from the manufacturing of goods to their distribution, consumption, and disposal. Annie Leonard analyses every step in the entire process, highlighting everything that does not work, everything that is bad for the environment, and everything that makes us unhealthy and unhappy. The human and environmental costs of consumerism should push us to look for new solutions, and the author suggests that they should all be based on one objective: to consume less. The Story of Stuff is based on Leonard’s 2007 animated documentary of the same name.

Analysis and key concepts

01.

Ecology and economics are bound together in a network of strong connections

02.

Just because we seek alternatives, it does not mean that we are against the production and consumption of goods

03.

The first step in the chain is the collection or extraction of materials that are used to produce goods

04.

Only one percent of our planet’s water is easily accessible

05.

The extraction of underground rocks and minerals harms the landscape and endangers the lives of humans and animals

06.

Cotton production is expensive, highly polluting, and consumes large amounts of water resources

07.

Some important questions we should ask ourselves before buying something

08.

Accessing goods from around the world is easy, but harms production and has a negative impact on the environment

09.

Consumers take on an active role in the fourth link of the chain, when they purchase the goods that have been produced and distributed

10.

Materialism makes us unhappy and harms the planet we live on

11.

Reusing is not fashionable, and it is often not cost-effective, so we tend to prefer to buy new products

12.

The ‘final stage’ of consumer goods: disposal is yet another step in the cycle that pollutes the planet

13.

Making producers pay for waste disposal could incentivise sustainability policies
