The cell, the gene, evolution by natural selection, life as chemistry, and life as information are five key elements in defining what the term ‘life’ actually means. Understanding what life is, and knowing in depth how it works, is essential to protecting all living organisms on Earth. In the book What is Life?: The Five Great Ideas in Biology, geneticist and cell biologist Paul Nurse, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Medicine, guides us on this fascinating journey through the mysterious twists and turns of life, in order to understand how all living organisms are deeply interconnected.

Analysis and key concepts

01.

The five main principles of biology, which give us a clearer view of how life works

02.

The cell is called the atom of biology, because it is the structural element at the basis of all life

03.

Understanding how cells work allows us to understand how life itself works

04.

Genes are fundamental to a cell's existence, because they are its main source of information

05.

In just over fifty years, we went from knowing nothing about the structure of DNA, to the first sequencing of the human genome

06.

Natural selection is responsible for the infinite varieties of species that have inhabited, and still inhabit, our planet

07.

Evolution by natural selection links every living being with all others

08.

Scientists all share the same view of life: that cells are nothing more than decipherable, albeit highly complex, physico-chemical machines

09.

The energy a cell needs to stay alive is produced by a chemical reaction

10.

In order to transform the data we have accumulated into actual knowledge, we need to understand the way living beings process information

11.

Genetic profiling, gene editing, stem cells, and GMOs are all great opportunities, but they must be regulated
